Description
Small squat figure in an iron shirt or chainmail; wonders and magic; paired with kukudh as January undead corpses laden with chains and deadly breath (Elsie 2001:150; Lambertz Arbëresh January trail; Dhama Karkanxholli; Shqipopedia). Greek καλλικάντζαρος loan adapted into Albanian/Arbëresh midwinter demonology; Ottoman kara koncolos contact also noted. Arbëresh Calabria and the twelve days of January carry the weight — not a pan-Albanian equal of the lugat.

Folk who kept Greek winters call the kin kallikantzaros; Albanian speech keeps karkanxholl and the chainmail name in the lexicon. Beside him, in the same January telling, the kukudh may wear the corpse-and-chains face. He is midwinter loan-metal and deadly air — a calendar figure, not the nation’s lugat.
