Kukudh (multi-type undead / plague)

Kukudh / Kukudhi

Southern plague/hag / chain-corpse field (Arbëresh January pair with karkanxholi).

Description

Canonical Albanian multi-type undead / plague entry. The same name covers several beings — not one body and not a pan-Albanian “evolved lugat boss.” Variants recorded by Elsie/Lambertz trail; Dhama Kukudhi; Meshkov-on-primaries; Shqipopedia: (1) Miser’s restless soul haunting his house; overnight stay fatal; brave boy may defeat → inherit (Lambertz/Haussig; Dhama). (2) Tomorr regional: unburned lugat → kukudh (Meshkov; Lambertz trail) — a regional escalation, not a universal 30-day/40-year maturation clock. (3) Stocky short-legged man with goat tail; invulnerable except vine noose (Dhama; Lambertz trail). (4) S Albania: blind female plague-carrier; kukudh also = cholera-worse disease; Tosk curse As të ha kukudhi! (Lambertz trail; Shqipopedia). (5) Arbëresh Calabria: January chain-laden corpses with deadly breath, paired with karkanxholl (Lambertz; Elsie 2001:150 Karkanxholl). Owl/cuckoo omen field; insult for evil man (etym kuku / kukuvriq).

Lead story

They use one name for more than one night. In the house of a miser the kukudh keeps the threshold: overnight is death, and some tellings say a brave boy who lasts the dark may take what the dead man clutched. Elsewhere the body is short-legged and stocky, a goat tail behind him, and only a vine noose will hold him. Near Tomorr, folk say an unburned lugat thickens into this heavier name — regional escalation, not a calendar every village keeps. In the south the kukudh can be a blind woman who walks plague, and the same word names a sickness worse than cholera; the curse still bites: As të ha kukudhi! In Arbëresh January the name wears chains and deadly breath beside the iron-shirt karkanxholl. Do not paint one cute goblin and call the account closed. Same name. Several beings. Owl on the border optional; Hollywood cape forbidden.
