Story paths

Description

Pan-Albanian ballad of the dead brother who keeps besa. Critical text for site v1 is Robert Elsie’s English translation of Kostandini e Dhoqina (Arpica near Margëlliç, Chameria), from Vladimir Zoto, Balada shqiptare (2006:57–59): nine sons and one daughter; youngest Kostandini pledges word of honour to fetch her living or dead; war kills all nine; mother’s claim at the grave raises him; tombstone and grave-soil become horse and saddle; mountain birds cry that the dead rides with the living; sister questions corpse-signs (smell, dust-glare) and is answered with living excuses; he leaves her at the door and flies back to the graveyard; mother names him dust; both women die on the threshold. Terror is oath-theology, not appetite. Display entry Kostandini / Doruntina; Dhoqina is the Chameria sister-name of the critical text. Kadare’s Kush e solli Doruntinën? is literary reception, not the folklore plot.

Lead story

A mother has nine sons and one daughter, Doruntina (Dhoqina in the Margëlliç song). A distant match is refused by all but the youngest, Kostandini, who gives his word of honour: living or dead, he will bring the girl home whenever the mother needs her. She marries across seven days’ road. War takes all nine brothers. The widowed mother calls Kostandini’s name at the grave — where is the besa now? Kostandini rises; tombstone and grave-soil become horse and saddle. He pulls his sister from the Easter dance; mountain birds cry that the dead rides with the living. She smells death on his shoulders and sees dust glare in his hair; he answers with powder and highway dust, and paints the black house as a mother’s whim. At the door he leaves her “for a twinkling” and flies back to the graveyard. Mother opens to a daughter who claims Kostandini brought her — then names him dust. Both women die on the threshold. The tale’s terror is not appetite: it is an oath that will not stay buried.
