The son is under the mountain before the mother is allowed to know the shape of the news. When Ajkuna’s lament finally opens — Ajkuna kján Omerin — the cycle gives her the room the warriors’ assemblies never did. She cries Omer’s name into the highland. In the song’s measure, rock and grief answer. She is not renamed Aelia Constantina; the name that matters is Ajkuna.
