Description
Northern Albanian spirits that suffocate humans with breath or steam — vapor demons of northern highland demonology (Elsie 2001:18–19). Nocturnal smothering; nightmare/steam motif related to the Balkan mora / makth complex. Makth (Elsie 2001:164; Shqipopedia) rides this short page as a named smothering face in the same vapor field.
Features
- suffocate with breath/steam (avullushe, N)
- sit on sleeper / cut breath (makth)
- catch-bargain: caught makth must grant demand
Lead story
Night in the north does not always bring a corpse. Sometimes it brings steam. Avullushe — named from avull, the breath you can see — settles on the sleeper until the chest will not rise. No fangs. No grave-skin. Only vapor and the old fear that air itself can pin a body to the bed. Makth answers under the same short page.
