Syqenëz (four-eyed oven hag)
Syqenëz / Syqenëza
Daughter Maro resembles her (Hahn Griechische und Albanesische Märchen — Augenhündin / Vajza e Syqenëza).
Description
Anthropophagous four-eyed hag of the Toskëri wonder-tale body: two eyes in front, two on the nape hidden under a headscarf; lures young women, bakes them in an oven, eats them. Daughter Maro resembles her (Hahn Griechische und Albanesische Märchen — Augenhündin / Vajza e Syqenëza). Hahn’s märchen text is the primary villain spine for this figure. She is not the one-eyed Katallan cyclops, and not the evil-eye (syri i keq) article.

Lead story
The headscarf is the lie that keeps the village polite. Under it, at the nape, two more eyes wait. In the Tosk kitchen the oven is already hot. Syqenëza speaks soft to young women — come in, rest, the bread will be ready — and what leaves the clay mouth is not bread. Daughter Maro has her mother’s look. Folk who collected the tale for Hahn called her the eye-hound woman; Albanian titles keep Vajza e Syqenëza. Do not give her one forehead eye and a forge like Katallan. Do not give her moth wings like the highland shtrigë. The brand is four eyes and the oven. Scholars may whisper Cerberus; the tale does not need the classical dog to bake.
