Description

Elsie 2001 pp. 235–236 s.v. Shtojzovalle (also shtojzorreshta / shtozote): invisible woodland song-and-dance beings of forest and pasture with denser distinct motifs (life-thread; clothing-marriage; chain-haunting; devour if stepped on; northern Catholic angel-neutrality syncretism; tear-drop death phrase i ka rënë pika). Note: Tirta treats Shtojzovalle / Shtojzorreshta as another name for Zana (≈ pp.115, 132 — taboo-name avoidance alongside Të Lumet, Nuset e Malit, etc.); Elsie also notes an etymology that treats the name as another word for zana but supplies a thicker motif set — this page stays separate, and Tirta’s “another name for Zana” status is stated plainly. Distinct from martial mountain zana as Elsie’s page — related figure only. The dance-youths-to-death revel motif is blocked. Fate sense of jashtesme → mira. Bonnefoy 1993:253 support.

Lead story

In the dusk forest the song starts before the faces do. Shtojzovalle — shtojzorreshta, shtozote — keep to wool and linen edges of the pasture world: invisible more often than seen, ringing the trees with dance that is not a zana’s war. Rarely a mortal sees them. Stories say a stolen garment can bind a marriage; a wrong step can cost more than pride; a haunting can follow like a chain. Northern tellers fold them toward angel-neutrality — label that syncretism, do not paint halos as pagan core. When death comes soft in the phrase i ka rënë pika, it is the dictionary’s tear, not a licensed second page of youths danced to bone.
