Description

Northern Albanian mountain nymph: beautiful, dangerous, warlike feminine spirits of high pastures, springs, streams, forests, and wild animals. Folk speech crystallizes their courage in trim si zana (“brave as a zana”). They confer protection and a share of psychophysical power on favored warriors. Highland appearance: fair maiden bathing in mountain streams; luminous presence at night rocks and cradles in epic song — not Victorian fairy wings, glitter, or Disney sparkles. Flagship epic kernel: in Fuqija e Mujit / “Mujo’s Strength” (Palaj–Kurti n. 7; Elsie–Mathie-Heck song 1), two zanas cradled infants in the high pastures; cowherd Muji rocks them; at midnight the mothers appear as lights on the boulder, offer strength / wealth / many tongues; he chooses strength; they give their milk in staged nursings; he lifts a progressive boulder test to the shoulders (song: “one thousand okas” / three ox-teams); they refuse further milk lest he crush the world; they bind blood-brotherhood (vëllam). Strength compared to a dragua/drangue is a song formula, not a man turning into a dragon. A zana can paralyze or petrify a human with a glance — Gheg shetuar / shituar names the victim. Folklore escorts the original Zana with three wild goats with golden horns. Fate-pairing (Doja) is a related link only. Kept distinct from Ora, Fatí/Mira, Shtojzovalle, and Perria.

Lead story

Night on the high pasture smelled of wet stone and cow-breath. Two cradles waited by a pale boulder where the herd-boy had lost his master’s cattle. He rocked the infants until they slept — no song, only the slow push of a staff-worn hand. At midnight two lights crowned the rock. The zanas knew him from the meadows. For tending their children they offered what mountain law allows a mortal: warrior strength, wealth, or many tongues. He asked only for strength enough to beat the cowherds who mocked him. They gave him their milk — three drops first. Power ran through him like a tree tearing its own roots. They pointed to the great boulder: lift. He raised it only to his ankles and let it fall. More milk: to his knees. Again: to his waist. Once more, and the song says the Lord gave him strength like a dragua. He seized the thousand-oka stone, bore it to his shoulders, held it aloft. They refused further milk, lest he crush the world. They asked blood-brotherhood; he answered that when he needed them they should aid him, and he them if insulted. Dawn took cradles and light. Below, on the Plain of Jutbina, the herders learned what mountain milk can do. Elsewhere, in other nights, a man who wrongs a spring or stares too long at a bathing zana may find his limbs locked — shetuar — stone-still under a glance that needs no wings to be terrible.
