Description

Thick serpentine body; earth/river/mud habitat; sleeps with eyes shut the whole year. On St. George’s Day (Shëngjergji) it opens its eyes, gazes at the world, and devours any human it sees. Folk etiology: Saint George cursed the beast to blindness except on his feast day (Elsie). Year-counts and pre-bolla variants are regional (e.g. Prishtina invisible forms) — keep them as regional notes, not a single national clock. Lifecycle parent of kulshedra in many tellings.

Lead story

For eleven months and many nights the coils do not stir. Mud and reed hold a thick body the color of river clay. The eyes stay shut — Saint George’s old curse, folk say: blind forever, except on his day. When the feast of Shëngjergji opens the calendar, the lids part. Whatever living thing walks into that gaze does not walk home. Then the eyes close again, and the year resumes its long sleep. In some tellings the thing was invisible twelve years before it was even a serpent; in the high Malësia they count slower — fifty years unseen to a bullar that suckles snakes and gives them venom; fifty more to an ershaj that winds a neck and takes a heart; a further century, still unnoticed, and what uncoils is no longer a bolla but the storm-mother kulshedra. Elsewhere a wren’s glance is enough to spoil the climb. Villagers who trust the sleep more than the calendar go looking for the blind coils before the feast — better a dead bolla in the mud than a dragon in the sky. (Do not confuse her with the small golden-horned snake of the hearth. That one keeps the house. This one waits to outgrow the year.)

Tirana: dark-hole → snake → kulshedra growth variant. Southern Albania: bullar often synonym of bolla. Poros Arvanite bullar = water snake (lexical). N Albania: bolla/bollar also ordinary grass-snake lexicon.
