Description

Vitore is the sacral household serpent — a hearth guardian and ancestor–fortune spirit. Folklore keeps her as a small, colourful, benign golden-horned snake dwelling in wall niches or foundations near the vatër; she is treated as a living ancestral soul whose hiss announces important family events, and respect taboo forbids killing or driving her out. She is not the house weasel Bukla, nor a generic Balkan dragon.

Lead story

The fire has been banked. Lime wash holds the day’s heat; walnut lintel, ash ring, the room smelling of bread crust and wool. In the wall, where plaster thins to a dark mouth, something gold-tipped stirs — small, coloured, quiet. No one names a hunt. The house knows its luck has a body. A hiss runs the boards like a finger along wood. Birth, return, death — the old ones say the serpent speaks first. Children are taught the rule before they can argue it: do not strike, do not smoke it out, do not make a game of the hole by the vatër. Kill the house snake and you kill the line’s favour; let it walk its circuit and the threshold stays watched. Outside, somewhere beyond the courtyard, other snakes sleep in mud and grow toward storm. That is another story — wild bollë, not this one. Here the mark is already carved in the door timber: an S-curve for fortune against the evil eye. The living keep the ash clean for the hearth mother; the serpent keeps the wall. When the embers settle, the niche is still warm, and the family leaves the dark mouth undisturbed.
