Lead story

The road thins under flowering almond, then into forest so thick a sword must cut a path. At a stream an old man warns: turn back — what waits is worse than death. The hero answers that destiny already chose the left-hand road. White-clad zanas laugh in their garden and name the prize: E Bukura e Dheut lives in the cave at the mountain’s foot. Past bramble hedge a witch keeps the gate with riddle, woolen bow, and riding test. Fail, and herbal spray turns man, horse, and dog to stone. Pass — or be rescued by a brother whose ring-gem went black — and the stone men wake under lily dew. In the cave mouth, under vine and cypress, she sits among her maids. Eyes lighter than the Moon, bright as Venus. She is not a soft princess waiting for applause: she is the reason the road grew teeth — underworld light as green-gold, crafty beauty, the quest that makes heroes the living — map. Elsewhere the same name opens other doors: three friends seek her; a boy reaches the Earthly Beauty; a scurfhead finds three Beauties in an underground kingdom; a stirrup Moor is her true face helping the hero; a fairy laughs a skull awake. Central mountains keep another breath of her — Wind lifts her home to Tomorr at evening after a day with her sister of the sea — but that bed-cycle belongs to the mountain’s own page.
